Looks like we have the DSC VHF
up and running here at TowBoatUS Beaufort. Some tips for
completing a free TowBoatUS DSC-VHF radio check:
* Before a DSC-VHF radio check, boaters must register their DSC-VHF radio
to recieve their own MMSI number and program it into their
radio. BoatUS provides this registration service free at
http://www.BoatUS.com/mmsi
* Just like putting a speed dial number in your cell phone, boaters can
enter the TowBoatUS 0-338-04000 MMSI in their DSC-VHF radio
address book.
* The free radio checks will not confirm the operation of the one button
distress button feature. However, TowBoatUS operators will be
able to confirm your GPS latitude and longitude position is
displayed during the radio check.
*The DSC-VHF radio must be installed (fixed-mount) and connected to a GPS
to ensure the USCG and others will receive your location when
using the distress button.

Q - from Dave Eger, Morehead City, NC.
I have installed a MMSI on my DSC VHF, and
would like to test it to make sure it is working and
installed correctly. I was wondering if you accept test
calls on this? If so, I assume that I would need your MMSI
number? I am out of Morehead City and boat throughout the
Morehead/Beaufort area.
A- To answer your question regarding DSC VHF radio
checks..........your question came at the same time as we
received notice from TowBoatUS headquarters that they are
working on a DSC radio check program. Right now they are
offering our tow locations a reduced rate on equipment to
get us started and we are hoping to get the program launched
very soon. Keep monitoring our website for further
announcements regarding the launch date!
