TowBoatUS Beaufort Adds Long Range Interceptor
Beaufort, NC November 2007-TowBoatUS Beaufort has acquired a
thirty-six foot RIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable) from Zodiac of
North America. The vessel is powered by twin Cummins QSB-380
diesels and Hamilton 274 Jet Drives. Zodiac’s superior design
and construction, Cummins power and Hamilton speed and
maneuverability come together in this unique package to form
an outstanding asset for use in the towing and salvage
industry. The vessel is designed and built to withstand
extreme conditions offshore while keeping the crew safe and
dry. With top speeds in excess of 40 knots, the vessel is
capable of rendering assistance quickly to the mariner in
peril. This acquisition makes TowBoatUS Beaufort, the only all
Zodiac fleet on the eastern seaboard. In addition to the
Interceptor TowBoatUS Beaufort operates a pair of Zodiac
Hurricane 733s.
The company answers over 650 calls each year from vessels
needing assistance. Most of those calls are from BoatUS
members whose membership entitles them to free towing,
ungroundings, and other services. There are over 650,000
members of BOATUS nationwide making BOATUS the largest boating
membership organization and the largest towing network in the
world. More boats, more places than any other towing
program.“High speed in rough weather, extreme maneuverability,
enough horsepower to tow a small ship, AND a climate
controlled pilot house. The new Interceptor is an awesome
machine. It extends our capabilities to safely rescue vessels
further offshore,” says Ian Luther, Station Chief and company
manager. “The boat has been on station here in Beaufort for
less than a month and has already proven its worth, pulling a
115 foot yacht from the rocks at Radio Island and towing an 85
foot vessel that had been holed and sunk in the live firing
range at USMC Camp LeJeune.”
Beaufort Marine Rescue, Inc, TowBoatUS Beaufort’s parent
company, is the leading salvage company in North Carolina with
such infamous challenging salvages to its credit as the
Gregory Poole, Captain Alex, Abracadabra and AARLUUK. The
company has standing contracts with four different crane and
barge rigs from 30 ton to 100 ton capacity. The addition of
the new Zodiac Interceptor extends the company’s reach and
capabilities particularly for vessels far offshore.
BMR, Inc has been in the marine assistance business in the
same location since 1986. The company is located on the
Beaufort/ Morehead Causeway adjacent to Piver’s Island and the
NMF/ NOAA and Duke University Laboratories. “We are preparing
our company to meet the future needs of the boating public
with dedicated design equipment such as the Zodiacs and top
professional captains,” states company president, Captain Rod
Hoell.
